“We are very pleased to announce that Claude Monet joins the world of Opal Sweater and Sock yarn. Oscar-Claude Monet was born in Paris on the 14th November 1840. His early work, which included the work “impression, Sunrise’, gave his name the entire movement of Impressionism. The visible reality loses its corporeality and the representation of the light and the mood become the main painterly task. He is considered an exceptional artist who has shaped a whole epoch. His most important stages of life were Paris, Le Havre and Giverny, here he died on 5th December 1926. His main subjects include the haystacks, water lilies, travel pictures of Venice, London and Norway and motifs of his beloved garden in Giverny. “The beauty of the atmosphere between the object and the artist” – as Monet called it, we have captured from eight of his artworks and converted to our Opal Sweater- and Sock yarn. Monets colorings are wonderful foundation for your lovely needlework. Engage the mood that arises between you and the colors of our Opal Claude Monet.” The winter classes are in full swing with great feedback from the attendees. Of the classes so far we have had great results on Brioche classes due to the versatility of the fabric created. The technique is a little tricky at first but once you get it, the possibilities are limitless due to the choices in yarns and colour combinations. Due to the interest in brioche I will be adding more classes to the spring 2019 schedule. ~Gabriela When you start to become interested in knitting socks, you’ll soon be told about a frightening disease that seems to affect the majority of the population: the SSS a.k.a the “Second Sock Syndrome“. Some of us decide to use a technique with the scary name of 2AAT whose name simply means “2 At A Time” or “2 at once”.
You are making two socks at the same time, on two circular needles; so when you're done, you're done! No need to keep track on the first sock to make sure the second sock comes out the same length. As long as you do the same thing on each sock in each round (e.g. increase at each beginning and end of the round in one row!), you never have to worry about keeping track of how many rows your foot/leg/cuff are, or where you've increased, where you've forgotten to increase, and where you made up for your forgotten increase. Your socks will turn out the same. Some say this process takes longer and is a little harder to grasp at first (L.K. said it took her five classes to finally get the process, challenging at first but most satisfying when done ) but once you get it you have this new skill forever and I would never go back to knitting one sock at a time. To simplify the teaching process I ask the students to knit the two socks with two different colours. It makes life easier to begin with. This technique also works great on sleeves and mittens or even hats. ~Gabriela Knitters often start by learning one style of knitting, and the most common is either English style knitting or continental style knitting, and the preference often depends on your teachers preference :)
Though my preference is to teach the continental style, I can still help those who choose the English style as easily as the continental knitters. If you are interested you can get one on one private lessons with me. Below is an article by Ashley Little about the difference between these two common styles of knitting ~Gabriela The Battle of English vs. Continental Knitting By Ashley Little February 12, 2014 https://shop.mybluprint.com/knitting/article/english-vs-continental-knitting/ Whether you’ve realized it or not, knitters do not all knit in the same way. I’m not just talking about how you hold your needles. Think about which hand you hold the yarn in, the tension you use when knitting, and where your yarn is coming from. Do your knitting friends knit in this same way? Probably not! All these little things — from how you wrap your yarn around the needle to which hand the yarn is in — help determine your knitting style. But let’s focus solely on English vs. Continental knitting styles for a second. Some knitters fiercely believe in one style over the other, but there’s no need to choose one style over the other for the rest of your knitting life. In fact, learning to use both of these styles interchangeably can actually be very beneficial to you! Can you spot the different styles of knitting below? 2019 Winter ClassesThe preparations for next year’s classes are in full swing… Along with our Knitting Classes and Workshops we have weekly Knit Therapy Classes offered on Tuesday and Friday mornings and Wednesday Evening. It is a great opportunity to get expert advice on any project you are working on and enjoy the company of other knitters Check out our website Needles and Knits for Knitting Class and workshop schedules and pricing. We offer classes in every skill level; Something easy like the Einstein Coat or Baby Albert Jacket which is all knit in garter stitch and has minimal finishing but still offers new skills like a crochet cast on and three-needle-bind-off. Moussaillon is another garment worked entirely in garter stitch with short row shaping. Knitting Brioche is one of the most popular techniques right now (check out the Holiday Vogue Knitting Magazine) and we have classes scheduled for a cowl, a blanket and socks in the New Year. We also have mitten classes to keep your hands warm; choose from felted or thrummed, or make them both. To keep your toes toasty there will be a Mukluks class and a slipper class. And back by popular demand we offer knitting two socks at the same time again. If you want to expand you stitch technique horizon we have scheduled a few classes and workshops with cowls that feature Fairisle, Beading, Slip Stitch, Brioche and Diamond Stitch. Bookworm is one of Heidi K’s newest designs featuring a comfy oversized style while The Perfect Edge By Von Hinterm Stein is a fitted cardigan with lovely princess lines and a notched collar. The Two way Cardigan offers a cozy shape that can be worn two different ways. And of course we have to have a skirt (Mint Tulip), a baby Owl blanket, a poncho, a cable hat, a kids tunic and a couple of bandit kerchiefs to round out the schedule. I almost forgot my favourite!!!!! The Golden Hour Shawl by Drea Renee Knits featuring fun colour changes, a little lace, a little mosaic and Bobbles or Nupps to keep things interesting. Our Knit-A-Long for the next session is ….ta-dah…. A Dragon Boat Cardigan, knit in the round with steeks (yay!!!) Tove knit it in 1996 and it took her a little over two weeks… I think we are going to take a little more time with it…. 2019 is just around the corner, hope that you have been inspired!
-Gabriela At Needles and Knits, our yarn dying class is all the rage and very popular! We have since held three classes! One of our students who had attended the Oct 13th class enjoyed it so much that she took the time to send me this note: Do you ever wonder how some yarns have such beautiful colours? So once again, by popular demand, we will be running our fourth yarn dying class in the spring of 2019.
Check out the gallery of beautiful yarn dyed by the October 13 class! |
